What is Worship?

I plan a lot of worship services. It is central in the job of the worship pastor. But I can honestly say that despite the hundreds of services I have planned, led or participated in, I can simply not wrap my head entirely around what corporate worship is.

It is community
It is need
It is celebration
It is spirit
It is heart language
It is mourning and joy
It is standing in a long line of historical worshipers
It is standing on the forefront of praise
It is joining with all of creation
It is singing with the heavenly hosts
It is exaltation, honour, adoration.
It is accepting an invitation into what is already happening within the Godhead.

It is a place we do not deserve to be, and yet are welcome.

But we reduce the profound exchange of need & answer, pour out & drink in, glorify & know to a simplistic, haphazard set list. We are concerned about how we sound, how we look, doing the newest songs first, bringing in the masses to see what we can do. We spend energy on doing what needs to be done, and making sure our voice is heard and that we are known as the expert in our "field". How often do we worship and miss worshiping?

How do you and your congregation engage in the profound exchange in the spiritual realm within the confines of your corporate worship services?
