Worship Series #1: Corporate Worship Conundrum

The longer I walk the road of both worshiper and worship leader, the more a conundrum I find is Corporate Worship in North America. The Worship movement has been consistently propelled forward over the last few decades, attempting to appeal to the insatiable appetite of the "Church" and the Christian with a walkman/discman/iPod. Songs have become more personal, music less chordy but more arranged, atmospheres revered. Hymns are loved or Hymns are hated. Guitars are necessary or guitars are just wrong. The service needs to be only an hour and a half, the lights need to be low, the media needs to be spectacular, the congregation needs to be stroked and the timing needs to be just so....and somewhere along the way I think that we have forgotten just Who the worship is for.

Slow down....What is worship?

It is the pure expression of our hearts to the Lord. In truth, it doesn't need to be convinced out of us...rather, in truth, it naturally emanates out of our hearts, our mouths and our bodies in song, testimony, praise, dance, love and service.

What is worship not?

It is not dependent on just the right worship set.
It cannot be contained inside of 90 minutes on a Sunday morning.
It is not dependent on whether or not the overheads, video or power point work that day.

It is not the feelings I get when I sings songs I like.
It should not be affected when songs are sung that I don't particularly care for...

Because...corporate worship is not for me! WORSHIP IS NOT ABOUT ME!!

I'm on my own worship journey. This is where I am right now. Over the next few days or weeks, I plan to delve into my own worship philosophies, and lay them all out before you and before the Lord, to see where He takes me next on this journey. Hope you join me.

I like this point, Elizabeth:
